Sign One – Clock Radio

The first time I heard of Sign One was the first time I saw bleubird perform live in Halifax, NS in 2002 at the Marquee Club. During bleubird’s there were a few nasty beats he was rapping over… one in particular I later found out was titled “Sunday Picnic” (from bleubird’s first tour ep). To me this beat was perfect; dark, creepy, nicely chopped up drums and it banged.

That beat maker was Sign One, a good friend of bleubird’s, from Michigan. Sign also added 3 beats to Sloppy Doctor and a short vocal part on the song “Trooth”.

I have never met Sign but had many talks with him on the telephone. He is a busy hard working father and husband who has become a very successful chef now living in Florida. Over the years he has sent me beats, and then complete songs and had been working on his debut album, “Clock Radio. But, like i mentioned he always had more important things to take care of outside of music.

Always a fan of his beats, he had me hooked with his raps when I heard “Dope Platelets

Khyro’s (Heliodrome) Spoken Word Piece on Miles Davis

[audio:http://www.radio-canada.ca/zone_musique/av/khyro.mp3]

www.musique.radio-canada.ca/musique/dossiers/milesdavis/index.aspx?ID=220

The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montreal, is holding an exhinit retracing the life of Miles Davis titles “We want Miles” until August 29 2010. In the steps of this exhibit the french radio of Radio-Canada recorded a podcast narrated by spoken-word artist Alexis O’Hara. This podcast follows the footsteps of Miles Davis in the different eras of Montreal that saw this great musician perform. A cast of musicians and artists comment on those times while the listener is invited to walk around the city. Heliodrome’s Khyro was asked to write a text inspired by the life of Miles Davis as a complement of this web feature. His writing reflects strongly on the many struggles lived by the artist; be it racism, violence, addiction to drugs and women…

Sontiago & Darien Brahms – Like Love – Digital Single

Sontiago has teamed with a good friend from Portland and dropped this real nice digital single for all of yall! Check the song and story and visit it the bandcamp link at the bottom for lyrics!

Enjoy. We hope this holds you over until she drops her next full length.

<a href="http://sontiago.bandcamp.com/track/like-love-2">Like Love by Sontiago</a>

“Darien Brahms, of Portland rock scene fame saw Sontiago do an a cappella version of this song and said, “What are you doing with that song?” To which, Sontiago replied, “Nothing really, I made a rough beat to go with it.” “Send it to me,” said Brahms.

The vision of the two’s first collaboration began there. Darien worked day and night playing multiple instruments to recreate a new beat inspired by Sontiago’s original version. The result was genius. Darien, a cold-ridden Sontiago, some beers, hot tea and yogurt covered pretzels got together to record some vocals in Darien’s home studio.

It was during the second vocal session that Sontiago suggested she had written some additional vocals for the ending. Darien orchestrated the vocal layers that really achieve what they consider the best part of the song: the last 60 seconds we told you about earlier.

On the third session Ric Loyd came to record live drums. He may have drank some beer.

Darien, the talented perfectionist that she is added more, subtracted some, mixed the vocals, mixed the drums and came up with something.

The mixes and various endings went back and forth and back and forth between the artists and this is the result, for you.”

Heliodrome & Jayrope – Swearing at the Sun (Limited Cassette)

Autumn 2009, French Canadian experimental rap duo Heliodrome, concludes an european tour in Berlin. During this tour they offered three different sets of music, either improvised folk of electronic. Each concert was seen as a possibility to expand their vision of their own music.

In Berlin, they met labelmate Jayrope, who’s about the release on Endemik his collaboration with american rapper Bleubird called Prinzenallee. After assisting at an Heliodrome concert in Berlin, he promptly suggested that they record together, in the format of a small show for some friends in his appartement. This improvised concert led to this release.

A really intimate improv session between likeminded artsits that gave birth to “Swearing at the Sun”, a modern play of Schreber’s delirium, where rap and rhythm fades away giving place to instant improvisation. The result is unclassifiable, sitting somewhere between avant folk, noise and free improv.
